Steering Wheel Noise HELP!

Hey guys i have a 05 4.4 x5 and I just recently notice that the steering wheel is making a clunking noise when turning left and right at low speed like letting it cruise in Drive and turning the steering wheel left to right and it makes a clunking noise and you can slightly feel like a bump.. I brought the car into the dealer and they say that they couldn't find whats worng and say it should be fine.... But i just noticed the problem after 4000 miles.. Anyone experiences this problem? What should i do.. Thanks.

I have also heard this is my 3.0. Not sure what it is, but I think it has something to do with the steering column. EVeryone I know that has had theirs checked out is told that its all fine...

I have the same thing. I notice it the most when turning into parking spaces. I took it into the dealer and they told me it was the "tires gripping the road". What a joke.

Hmm...sounds like the problem with my steering wheel too...
The steering feels as if something's there, behind the steering wheel. When you going slow and move the steering about the centre, like moving left and right (just little bit), you can really feel somethings back there blocking the steering...

And they told me it's all fine too...hmm...but I'm pretty sure, it wasnt like this when I first got the car...at least for 20 000km I had no problem with it...

My steering wheel does the exact same thing - havn't brought it to the dealer yet but I plan to soon. I'll let you know what my dealer says...

I have an '04 4.4 sport with 15K on it right now and I'm not really sure when this started, but I agree, I don't think it was there for at least the first 12k or so. Depending on the response I get from the dealer, I'm going to ask them if I can take a new X5 out with the tech to show him it's not there when new...

It sure sounds like a control arm problem, and it looks like a very common problem on BMWs. Mine does the same intermittenly now and it's also an '04 with about 15k miles on it. What's wrong with BMW and control arms? It must be specific to the type of rubber bushings that they use

You well may be correct, but the noise and "feel" I get really seems to be coming from the steering wheel or column...

yeah it seems to be coming from the steering wheel or column.. I don't know about the control arms... my service advisor told me that they checked everything from inside out and couldn't find any problem.. X5 JAY keep us updated after you bring your X in to the dealer..

Will do, but it probably won't be for a couple of weeks or so.
