Sounds like there could be some truth to US models being a tad weaker in certain areas..It makes sense since they have to meet US spec..But its kinda dissappointing. I wish the US models were the highest quality or at least up to the Euro standard..

Is the above statement not a broad generalization on a country of almost 200 million licensed drivers based on a limited opinion of car washers in Georgia? It's just heresay. I just think it's ignorant to make statements like that. I'm not saying we need flame retardant rock solid posts here, but don't make statements as if it were fact because "my friends who all drivve German cars and all knoe cars". Honestly...

Oh...and yes, UncleBob, small differences exist based on markets for various safety and regulatory reasons, but retooling a factory line for major region-specific things like suspension, material quality (sparkplugs, leather), etc, as jignaro suggests seems highly unlikely.

Are you fricking kidding me guy? Yoiu need to chill, seemsm to me liek you are insecure, what do you ned to make it a political issue, the very reason i joyned this forum is because i love BMW and i owb one, AMERICAN VERSION TOO? so i do not accept your critisicm, all i'am doing is having a conversation and you did the very thing that i was affraid of. Honestly, i was considering not to start a thread because of this, I I'AM NOT HERE TO HAVE ARGUMENTS AND againn you write things that makes me not start threads or write anything at all.

actually i did some research about taking my swiss X5 to n. america and was told i couldn't because it didn't meet american standards for safety. i would assume that implies that my X5 is not as safe as the american versions although i find that tough to swallow.

i can understand changing the lights and a few other things but safety standards??

Doesn't mean it is not as safe, just means it doesn't match DOT specs. Could be something as dumb as white signals instead of amber....it is all wrapped under the title "safety".

FWIW, the summer package you get in India on an X5 is way more solidly built (eg. no bubbling in upholstery since its the vinylish trim) doesnt look good but doesnt bubble either, the airfilters are different, same box but different filter for the dusty conditions. the leather is smooth with no ridgy texture, just more supple and softer (and yes BMW says its genuine leather), more black trim parts instead of body color even on 2003+ but most importantly even with potholed roads, it rides better, then again you cannot comapre missouri potholes to indian potholes ...

actually i can say the same thing about ford escort in india (way better built and optioned including leather ) then again its not the same escort as sold in US either ...

keep in mind and i dont know how to say this without sounding classist, someone who can afford an X5 in india has more refined tastes / upbringing / schooling / family lineage / old money than lets say an average buyer in US ... and BMW undertands that .. ... more so with a TKD factory in india now ... a typical X5 owner is treated like royalty and cars are pampered at the service station; lot more than job at stake if the guy does a short oil change or forgets to detail an airvent ... less plastic, the fan shroud is held by different pinchers than US ones, in short, i think there are quite a few differences in worldwide markets even if its built in spartanburg ...
