bluetooth/voice

I Recently got an 05' 4.4i w/ nav (non DSP) I’m trying to determine if if I have Bluetooth capabilities. I looked in the back trunk area and see the unit that has the PK number on it (don’t know what it’s called) and the antenna on top of the rack with the purple /black cable. I see on the steering wheel the (talking man) button and R/T button. But when I press the talking man button nothing happens. Is there something wrong with button, unit, or is it just a button that doesn’t do anything with out some kind of option I’m missing. The R/T button just says empty phonebook. I don’t have the cell phone adapter for the center console. But form what I’ve heard it wasn’t necessary. The talking man button is for the voice control is it not? And should hear a tone after pressing it. And is also used for pairing cell phones, or am I completely misinformed. Any help would be appreciated.

You probably don't have bluetooth, in the sense of being able to hook your cell phone to your car. You probably have BMW Assist.

I don't know for sure with your year and model, but with my '03 4.4i, the talking man button did nothing till I had bluetooth installed. If your display shows "Empty Phonebook" when you push the R/T button, it's because your BMW Assist phonebook is empty. That's the phone unit and antenna you're seeing in the back end of your X. If you press the SOS button or BMW Assist button, you'll hear a voice telling you you aren't subscribed to the service, how to subscribe, and etc.

If you want to install bluetooth, like what bimmernav sells, your BMW Assist module must be removed, and is replaced by the bluetooth module. The same microphone can be used, but you'll need a pairing button to tie yor phone to your car, the bluetooth ULF module, and (I believe) a BT antenna. It all screws into and plugs into your existing wiring. The bimmernav peoiple can help you directly - they know exactly what they're talking about.

I had bluetooth installed last year in my '04 325ciC and now this Fall in my '03 X5. I wouldn't be without it. It works like a charm, and is worth every cent, as far as I'm concerned.

Hope this helps,
Dave

If you have an 05 model year then I think you automatically have blue tooth (correct me guys if I am wrong). I think all you need to do is pair your phone and there are a few articles scattered around here that instructs you as to how to do so. Good luck.
