Best way to sell high mileage X5?
Can anyone suggest the best way to sell an older (2002) X5 4.4i with higher mileage (72,000) miles, but CPO'd to 100,000? I'm NOT selling it yet. This is NOT an ad. Probably in about 1 month, I'll be getting a lease vehicle from work, so I won't the X5 anymore. I called 2 BMW dealerships, and they wouldn't be interested. When they hear the mileage, they almost hang up on me. I called a friend's used car place, and he told me the book was only $18,300 - $3300 for the extra miles. 15K is way too cheap! CPO'd didn't even matter to him. I assume that's only transferable to another buyer, not a dealer.
Do I try ebay, craigslist, other ideas? Thank you!

I don't think 72K miles to a 2002's car is high mileage!! Just try to put on a newspaper to sell the privatly !!! Car dealer need to make at least 2 to 3 grands on your car!!!!

Yeh thats kinda strange, just put it in autotrader and call it a day, thats not high mileage at all for an 02. I would worry more about the possibly options and condition/maintence of the car.

Where I live the BMW dealer only sells cars that fit their image. Anything they trade in that is over 4 - 5 years old or with high mileage is sold via a tender to non dealer prestige car sellers. You may get a better offer from this type of yard if you want a quick sale but private would get a better sale price if you have the time.

We sold our 2001 3.0i Sport (loaded), with almost 90k miles, for $20k in June. That was a little fortunate, but you still shouldn't have much of an issue.
At least try putting it in Autotrader for a month or so, and price is reasonably. |

Try Ebay... well worth the $40 bucks! Cars.com is also quite good.

I had great success with Craigslist. Free, photos, easy to edit/update. Sold a 5 year old 325xi to the first person who called.

And of course, promote the positives where applicable: single owner, dealer maintained, lovingly cared for, no rips, tears, dings, dents, no wrecks, no smoke, all original, etc. And make sure the car is as clean inside and out as possible. Good luck

Ya private sale is probably the best way to go. Some used dealerships give you a good price for your car, i know of a few where i am. Hard to find i'm sure though. I had a tough time selling a friend's Audi A4 on Craigslist - but maybe he priced it too high. spend the $ on a detail job or spend time and do it yourself. Good luck!

Thank you all for your time and great answers. My main concern now is selling it privately. I don't have the title. BMW Financial does. I actually still owe 20k on it! That seems to be much more then a dealer would pay, and approximately what I can get privately. It's been just like an expensive lease for the past 2 years. 2.9% financing was great, but the 72,000 mileage seems to cut the value no matter how nice the X5 is.
I really wouldn't know where to start on how to trust someone's bank check, and how could they trust me for getting the title? That may not be described well, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Is that hassle worth it? It would also seem insane to give the X5 away to a dealer for around 15k, 16k or 17k when I owe 20K! Thank you again!
