OBD scanning

I'm looking into seeing what I can do about connecting a PC to my X5 and what can be done with this setup. I have some basic questions about which I could do with some help.

AFAICT, I need an interface unit between the OBD port and to the PC (via RS232, USB or BlueTooth). Does this HAVE to be BMW specific or could it be anything that is compatible with the ISO9141-2 protocol that BMW use?

If it also talks ISO14230-4 (KWP2000) then it ought to work with the Mini too?

What software is needed on the PC? I see Carsoft often referred to in reference to BMWs, but is this mandatory or can any software talk to any interface, or does the software also need to understand the different OBD protocols?

Can Carsoft be used with the Mini?

Am I correct that I would be able to control the car and key memory options in this way?

I'm sure others have a firm grasp of this and I'd be grateful for their help.

Thanks.

i would find a bmw specific application as I understand it can read more of the sensors than a standard OBDII application.

try autoingenuity.com (sp)

Any suggestions as to suitable software? Is carsoft the best option, or is there a better solution?
