I have an 02 x5 3.0. When my check engine light came on i purchased one to see what was the matter... If you are pretty savvy with cars, should be a useful tool. It's not a 100% solution, but it narrows down what you are looking for. Just my personal experience. My throttle body gave out and it threw a ton of codes, all of which went away with a new throttle body, but you have to kind of know the issue so you're not throwing $1000 worth of parts at the car. Like in my case, one issue snowballed into alot of issues, all of which were fixed by changing one part.

it will work ... wont give you detailed or all data but it will work. just fyi: every auto store like autozone / pepboys/ kragen/ oreilly auto/ advance auto ... all read ur codes for free ... some even will let you take it with you .. ymmv of course ...
