dvd nav versions?

Kind of a newbie question, but I just got my '04 X5 with Nav system. It has a DVD based nav system and the dealer gave me a DVD to go with it.

My question is, is there any way to get the cool 3D looking nav software on my system? I think mine is running version 4 1/2 or something like that (I will have to check again next time I am in the car).

I assume my DVD is new, but is there a newer version of the software for the Dealer to upload to my Nav or is what I have all that is out there?

Thanks so much!

You can burn the nav software and do the upgrade yourself at home. Check the links on the xoutpost.com homepage in the navigation section.

thanks, is this something the dealer can do? i am a bit wary of messing things up by doing the software upgrade on my own..

also, what are the new features that would come out with this upgrade? is my version considered very old?

I also have a Mac, so burning might be difficult since I assume most of the instructions out there are for PCs (since it is a PC world)..

No need to actually 'burn' a disc. New upgrade discs (with new maps) are readily available from e.g. eBay - much cheaper than official BMW ones (although may not be strictly legal so I couldn't possibly suggest you do this:-) and you just put the upgrade disc in, it runs, installs the new system and then you replace it with the map disc again - really simple.

I think v29 software included the new 'perspective' view.

yes, version 29 has it. But once you completed the installation, you might not see it right away, just go to SET, and hold MENU button for 10 seconds, scroll though the hidden menu and enable perspective.

NOTE: It might show automatically, but it didn't on mine when i upgraded.

Yes the dealer can do it. I have heard of some dealers doing it for free. There are also instructions for doing from the Mac online in the nav section on the X5 world homepage. Here is one of the links to get you started:

There's no problem for the original poster in any case, as you don't actually need to burn anything. Just buy the upgrade disc and use it as is. I also am a Mac user and although I have no problem doing so, I KNOW I didn't burn any disc, either for the software OR map upgrade.

Mind you, if you're copying from someone else... (perish the thought:-)

The latest European maps are 2008, no idea about the US maps.

thanks for all the info, my local dealership had told me that these software versions are for the newer models and not for the '04? is this correct information? is it a case where they are not "officially supported" for the '04 but they work on it? he also seemed be confused whether i wanted the new firmware or the streets, i told him I was more curious about the perspective view/etc and he said that was not possible on a 2004 X5 only the newer ones.. is this true?

if i were to do it on my own, would it alter my warranty in any way?

i also just went out to the car and verified my software version, under settings it reads SW 4-1/20 so it looks like I have V22..

So v29.1 will bring you to 4-1/91, a big jump.
