I'm looking for a good place to buy a driver's side outer CV joint assembly? My boot is ripped and the joint makes a loud clicking noise when I turn.

If you want a new part, try Bavarian Autosport. If you're looking for remanufactured, try Partstrain.com (they carry A1 Cardone). I'm a little skeptical about the rebuilt parts though...

check ebay. Got a great unit at an even greater price of less than $200 NEW.
You will need to confirm left or right / in or outer unit as they are all different and can not be interchanged.

Why is that? I've used many remanufactured parts in the past on many different vehicles. The reused parts are usually the non wearing parts and cardone seems to be a fairly big outfit.

I purchased one from this seller on Ebay HERE great price, I was sceptical, but thought it was worth a shot, he had good feedback....delivery to Ireland and all for under $200.

Fitted to X approx 5 months ago, no issues, takes approx 30 mins to do once you have a ramp and car is off the ground...

Also please read....Bit long winded this but may help others with the annoying suspension 'CLUNK', I've been meaning to post on this for a while now, I had an annoying 'Clunk' in passenger (left for me, I'm in Ireland) side front suspension since I got the Jeep...

Best description I have of 'Clunk' is...when turning left at slow speeds ease off accelerator, straighen up and then accelerate, or drive slowly up a Curb (allowing left wheel to hit curb first), or (in a carpark perhaps), turn left at slow speed, hard lock right, as weight of car shifts from left to right) a very noticable metal sounding 'clunk', cannot be mistaken for anything else, seem's to coming from right under floor in footwell and seems to be closer to transmission tunnel than to the wheel, not sure if my description is confusing but if you have the clunk you'll know, all I can say is it never happen's when going straight or fast and always as the weight of the car shifts.

I changed the control arm and tension struts including ball-joint (think they are the correct terms) but clunk was still present, next move was to do the sway bars, but left side outer CV boot was split, and the dreaded clicking had started and was getting more annoying so it was my next job.

I purchased one of the above and fitted it, no stealer issues for me either as my brother is a mechanic. He said the clunk I had was not the CV he was adamant that CV's never make this kind of noise, he was convinced it was the antiroll bar bushings (mounts), anyway's fitted new CV Axle and guess what 'clunk' was gone. complete silence from the front of the car

As we wern't expecting this we had a good look at the old CV Axle and there was a lot of sideways play (left to right along the shaft), so we figured the shaft must be moving in and out of the damaged CV as the weight of the car shifts, no scientific evidence to back this up but my clunk is gone, as a matter of best prectice I had replaced right side control arm/tension struts also, so car feels very tight up front

Hope this is of help to some of you guys, and I can 100% vouch for the seller in the link (no relation), and the CV axle 5 months and 8,000 miles later is still perfect

Itu-Baba: I'm skeptical of the Cardone remanufactured parts because, if you search the internet in general, you'll see some complaints about their parts. As a buyer, I have no idea of Cardone just repacks old joints with grease, in which case that would be like a ticking time bomb waiting to wear out.

Of course, some of these complaints may be outliers, but I'd just feel safer buying new parts, considering the amount of work it takes to replace.

Grahamf12, who is the manufacturer of the parts sold by Groton on eBay, and why do you suppose they have different prices for the axle shafts - there is a difference even between parts for the same side:

Not sure exactly who manufactures them, didn't really pay attention to any markings on shaft, box it came in was nondescript.

They do seem to have a confusing price structure, they list 4 as you have said, they differentiate between right and left, and Axle's for 3.0 and 4.4, sure look at the the pricing they have for Porsche cabrio hood motors, all over the place

The day I purchased mine they had a 10%-off sale, and that only ran for 24 hours!, I picked cheapest pricing availabe for my car, and let them look after the rest, quality was very good, no real visable difference between it and the BMW one that came of the car with the exception of a few missing BMW roundels
Has performed faultlessy though, my wife drives the X, and takes a spirited drive across the dublin mountains every day on her way to work, shocking roads, big potholes, actually not much of a road at all, so its no motorway cruiser, if it was bad quality it'd be stuffed by now.

I figured at the price they are selling them, its nearly as cheap to change the shaft than repair the CV boot, and if your CV is clicking you haven't got much choice, Dealer price here in Ireland for a genuine CV Shaft was approx €700 ($1000)
