Kickdown
I am new to this site. I am UK based and am on another forum x5drivers.co.uk I used to drive a BMW X5 3.0i manual X5 and loved it, so upgraded to a 4.4i and had to lump the automatic gears. Its a 2004 facelift model Here is the problem, I am of the belief that my gear box is defective. In Kickdown it will rev into the red zone and on occasion will bounce off the rev limiter. I have driven a range of automatic cars (but enver owned one until now) and have never seen an automatic car red line and bounce off the limiter. This only happens in kickdown or by pushing the gas pedal to the point just above the kickdown switch..... I spoke to a pal who used to work briefly in F1 and extensively in the motor trade and he thinks its odd. I am at a dielemma, take it to the dealler (its still got warranty left) but could be charged £100 (approx 200usd) if they find nothing wrong so want to pretty sure before I take it in. To cut a long story short is redlining a feature of 4.4i (or any automatic BMW) in kickdown. |

Mine will occasionally hit the rev limiter in 1st gear, however when I don't hit kickdown from a start I rarely get past 4500 in 1st even when the car is floored. This doesn't happen in any other gear though

In sport mode on the gearbox, I have no trouble readlining my 3.0 when I mash down on the pedal. As long as it shifts at redline and does not simply stall or go past it, I don't see what the problem is...

In my car it goes beyond the redline, the red line starts @6000 rpm, this car goes to 6500 rpm, just before the rev limiter and sometimes it will hit the rev limiter.
A person who has a facelift 4.4i on x5drivers.co.uk reported that his 4.4i facelift changes up @ 6500rpm and agreed that it would be best if it changed a 6000rpm, not beyond it. |

The facelifted X5 4.4i, with the Valvetronic and 315hp, does have a 6500rpm redline. The marking on the tach from 6-6.5k just means you're approaching the redline. No worries.

I still think however the car rev beyonds its peak power output @ 6500 and the change etc would be smoother at 6000rpm. I think the actual acceleration would be faster with a change @ 6000rpm. I'll just have to get hand wrists active and manually change @ 6000rpm but @ least I know the gear box is working (for now anyway) |

How rough is the upshift? The upshift is likely not going to be seamless, you'll probably get a minor nudge but that's the sporting nature of the X5. You're lucky you get the full redline though! On the X3, no matter what mode you're in, it upshifts prematurely at 6000rpm in 1st gear.
Thankfully, the newer BMWs like my parent's E90 325i let me zing up to 7000rpm in all gears. |

Its not the smoothest, with a manual (or in the US a stick shift) I could do better, but its fast shifting.
Had it changing into 5th @ 130mph and it was nice to keep both hands on the wheel so I should be happy really. |
