registering US X5 in europe?

hey guys, does anyone know anything about importing US cars to europe? i want to bring my US bought 2003 X5 3.0 to eastern europe, but not sure if they will accept is as E-type or not. i know that for american cars like (chevy, ford, dodge) it costs about $2,000 to make it e-type... but X5 is already a german car. thanks for the help

what does "e-type" mean? (a jaguar?)

second, no, if you bought your X5 in N. america then it is not a german car. if it's made for the american market, then it's an american car. and it's even made in the US. I can't bring my european X5 to n. america because it doesn't meet your standards.

how long do you plan on staying? if it's less than a year, you can probably drive with your american plates. if you want to permanently import it, you have to change a few things like lights and the speedo. no much else.

lastly, are you aware of the price of gasoline and road taxes based on displacement are?

I seriously doubt you can drive around with american plates...You can't drive around in the US with Euro plates no matter what...

yes you can drive around with US plates for a certain amount of time (not sure how long) as long as you get international auto insurance while youre in europe. I did before with a different car, but now i need to do it permanently (you can drive in canada, mexico with your US plates.. why couldnt you in europe?.. )

If thats true..I stand corrected..I know you can drive in North America with US plates but I just didn't think you could in Europe...You can't drive in US with Euro plates..

It is possible to drive i Europe with US license plates for up to 12 months , all you need
is insurance, which is offered by the German Car Club ADAC for appr 200 Euro a month.

To legalize a X5 in Europe (Germany) you'll have to change the headlights (the US headlights are auto-leveling which is not legal in Germany) and likely the LCM (Light control module) . You'll also have to retrofit the rear fog lights .
You also need to apply for a new title/"Fahrzeugschein" , this is not a big problem as
the same car is already sold in Germany and therefore you don't need to go through
a single vehicle registration ("Einzelabnahme") but can use the papers from the
manufacturer .

All in all it will cost you appr 2000 Euro to legalize a X5 in Germany (plus shipping from the US) .

auto-leveling headlights are not only legal but they are mandatory for xenons. headlight washers are also mandatory for xenon lights supposedly to reduce glare that blinds oncoming drivers.

I've lived in europe for 25 years and i have seen many people bring cars over from the US and they do drive around on US and Canadian plates temporarily. the reasons are not for safety, they are for taxes.

many years ago, each country used to have their own rules. but now things are getting more harmonized with the european union. even switzerland is now accepting EU certification despite the fact that it is not a member of the EU (and hopefully never will be!). The eastern countries have only recently and may not have adopted their regulations yet.

the most simple solution is to check with the country that you plan on importing to.
