My wife had the same issue on her 2005 X3. She ended up getting the entire seat (bottom part) replaced under warranty. I'm guessing the '01 isn't covered, but BMW didn't fix hers, they replaced it.

Sorry to bring this thread back, but I wanted to see if any others have had any experiences with the BMW extended warranty and this issue.
I have a hot spot in about the same place... drivers left side cushion towards the back corner. It finally go so hot today, I couldn't leave it on. Afterwards, I could smell a burning smell from that part of the leather. I checked the CPO excluded items list and it doesn't seem to be listed, so I'm hoping it's covered with no problems.
