Since you didn't specify where your leak is occurring on your water pump, if it's leaking from the gasket area at the rear, or the thermostat area, the gasket probably wasn't coated with water-based lubricant during installation. If this step is skipped on either gasket, if the gasket were nicked or misaligned during in the install, it will result in a water leak.
If the water leak is from the shaft, then the pump is defective. Is it OEM? If your leak is from the hose area, then there are several reasons for this, but basically due to a bad seal, have the hose and the mating metal spout checked . . . . . |

original BMW(not just X5s) water pumps typically fail between 60,000-80,000 miles - due to plastic vanes - some last 150,000+, some less than 50,000 - if you are taking it apart, then change the pump & thermostat (& gaskets) - it is less expensive to do it all at once - how are the belts??? - I had them done the same time

replaced mine at 81,000 miles but make shure you dont nick the gasket and take time in cleaning the surfaces completely ! Also you might want to check the two metal pipes that attatch into the back of engine are secure as if not it will leak and appear to come from gasket as this is were it runs to.

on the E36 and 4.4 waterpumps I install the gasket dry. no RTV, sealant, etc.
maybe a dab of adhesive if it's prone to falling off. |
