With record snowfall this year in Madison, approaching 80 inches, I have had no problem with snow or ice. I am only using the stock 17's with the original tires. Not dedicated snow tires. We just had 16 inches of snow last week one day and I made it home from work no problem. I only live 10 miles from work but over half of the miles are on country roads. I passed over a dozen cars in the ditch on my way home and I never even broke a sweat. It was amazing to see. Most of the cars just got stuck on the shoulder of the road and not even in the ditch. They did not have the ground cleanance or the traction to go any further. My friends wife even got stuck in her brand new Yukon Denali XL a block from my house. I had to go shovel her out. Anyway, it has been a wild winter here and I have not had any problems with the snow. Good luck with your decision but as you can tell from reading here you can not go wrong with an X5.

Well, I've got the 19's/Sport Package and my X is ALL over the road in the snow...very scary. I bought some 17" rims off of Craigslist and just mounted them up with some winters + studs... Although they're only on the car for <3 months a year here in Oregon, it's worth it for heavy mountain snow...and we got a ton of it this year. Just my .02.

I have 18" continetal "ice 4x4 contact" winter tires and they had to struggle up to my cabin.

but as everybody is saying. The weakest link is which tire and not the x5. so next year I am buying nokian with studs. but also for better braking in the winter season.

a little more snow and the X5 disappear....

Ya, i am running the nokians without studs on 18" x 8.5" they are good tires, but a little loud, esp on the highway, i know winter compound will be lounder than A/S, but they are little much.

Yupp the Nokian Hakkapeliitta with the new thread pattern and everything. I wonder if the pirellis are quieter or maybe the m2.

No noticeable noise from the M2 on the highway here.

Driving the X5 in the snow is awsome, and I don't even have winter tires! Driving it in the snow makes you forget about all the problems the car has had, and the crappy gas mileage!
