It is a crap shoot though. You may not experience any of these issues. I would say the absolute safest bet is to put money aside every month into a savings account for repairs, but you have to be the type of person that can stick with it and not dip into that account for anything else.
Mind if I ask what warranty you have since it is not OEM?

I bought our X from Carmax. Their warranty was substantially lower tham BMW's, but the Carmax Maxcare warrantly allows me to take the X to either Carmax or any BMW dealer for repairs. I have a $50 co-pay at any Carmax dealer and a $75 co-pay at any BMW dealer. I only take it to the BMW dealer for repairs because I trust them a lot more than Carmax.

I think the warranty cost me $2,800 and was for 36 months or 36,000 miles and like I said I have already had over $4k of work performed. I knew of all the problems that most owners have with the X, especially the V8 models, so I figured that this particular warranty was a no-brainer. This is one warranty that Carmax is definately losing money on and that is good for me.

That warranty may have actually only cost me $1,800. I can't remember. I am going to look for the invoice. Either way I remember it being a really good deal.

I'm at 70K and change right now... X at the dealer now.... Here's the laundry list:
  • Brakes
  • Left & right Axles
  • Both rear light assemblies
  • Actuators for both back doors
  • Thrust bushings
  • Power Steering pump
  • Belts
  • Radio Amp
Waiting to hear what the extended warranty will pick up.

I know the brakes and belts are on me....
