For those with 75K miles+

I have an '01 3.0 that is exactly 7 years old this month and has 77K miles on it. I bought it brand new and have done the regular service on it and the only thing I have had to repair on is 1 rear window regulator and a of couple control arms and ball joints in the suspension. I had an extended warranty that I cancelled because of a weasel clause in it and I got pro-rata money back on it. I plan on driving it at least 2 more years and am thinking about getting an extended warranty but a decent one will be $2K-$2,500 and am figuring it's been rock solid so far maybe that would be a waste of money. From those of you with 75K+ miles what type of things have you had gone bad on it--starter, alternator, water pump, A/C condensor, suspension ? Think it's worth it to just ride it out with no warranty ?

if you can get the warranty then go for it. I'm nearing 100k on my 01 and thankfully haven't had any major problems yet, but I definately wish I had an extended warranty just in case.

Mine was just in for a t-stat and they also replaced a cv boot and a leaky power steering hose. It has 78k miles. The 3.0 is a pretty dependable engine, though. My '01 530i had zero problems through 100k miles.

If an insurance company is going to charged you $3000 (or whatever), for a 2/3 year waranty, then they know that on average, an X5 is going to need no more than that much work minus their profit.

Does it make sense to give them that money vs just keeping it in your own bank account just in case?

Sure, you may be unlucky and need more work than the average owner, but how much more?

I bought a 02 4.4 sport package last year with an extended warranty on the vehicle. Here are the items that I have had to get replaced under warranty after about 65K; control arms, alternator, water pump, valley pan gasket and valve cover gaskets. These items totaled around $4k. I bought the X with 62k on the clock and I now have 86k. My warranty was the best thing I have ever done. It has more than paid for itself and I have 2 years or 14k left.

It is a crap shoot though. You may not experience any of these issues. I would say the absolute safest bet is to put money aside every month into a savings account for repairs, but you have to be the type of person that can stick with it and not dip into that account for anything else.

Right now I have 76k on the clock and bought it with 68k. When I picked up the car I quickly noticed my coolant expantion tank is leaking, my windshild washer fluid is leaking/ has weak spray power, Oil leak that I replaced with valve cover gaskets and an oil hose, and CV boots. Kind of alot in just 8k miles. Getting a little discouraged....

2001 4.4 X5 132000 miles
I took ownership of with 103000 miles 18 months ago.

In those 18 months I have had to deal with the following.
Coolant tank
Ign switch
Rear window regulator
Sun roof gasket
Fuel filter
Oil separator hoses
Belts
Tires
Brakes
Windshield wipers
Windshield (broken, auto insurance paid for new one)

You'll have to ask yourself what would be covered by the warrantee and how much it cost. I would not go for the extended warrantee; but, I fix my own vehicles.

I forgot. One more thing to add.
CV BOOT.
actually I changed the entire axle because it was easier and I was unsure how long it had been ripped.

bought my 2001 X5 4.4 sport 6/05 with 42K - now 74K

expansion tank replaced before I purchased it - it began as a 3yr lease car in Philly, then bought by someone who used it for skiing trips, but did not invest in snows, so he only put 6K on it for the year he had it

I replaced...
RR window regulator
windshield
did the water pump/thermo/belts at 62K for pc of mind
acouple hoses were replaced during the Dinan install and 1 control arm

no warrantys - it runs great
I have my BMW dealers look at it everytime before heading X-country, so I stay on top of anything that may go wrong as it's cheaper to fix in the shop than out on the road

but most of my driving is interstate - no daily commute in traffic

spent more $$$ on mods than repairs
