Driving in regular D vs. driving in DS?

Do you guys have any knowledge whether driving an E53 in regular "D" most of the time will increase the lifetime of the vehicle vs. driving in DS?

I usually drive in D, thinking it will be easier on the engine over the long haul, since I plan to keep my X for quite some time. But I don't know if there's any validity in that.

It should be, since you will drive on higher RPM if driving on Sport, on the other hand, You do nead to drive you engine on high RPM every now and then.

I would not be worried about the engine really, and be more concerned with the added stress it places on the Auto tranny more then anything.

But overall, I would not worry about driving in DS. I use it about 50% of the time.

I drive in Sport or Manual about 99.9% of the time....the 0.1% that it is not in DS/DM is the time it takes for me to move the shifter to the left! So far so good..88,000 miles LOL I pray everyday that it doesn't break... but it is to much fun...I think I need a manual!

Same here, DS all the way - I wouldn't worry. 82K miles and still going strong!

It's cool to run the engine hard once in a while. I drive the X3 very slowly most of the time; when I run it to redline a couple times, it seems to shift a bit smoother for a while when loafing around town immediately afterwards.

I push the shifter to the left every time I get in the car. I don't even think about it anymore. The only time I put it in D is at highway speeds. It's probably a little harder on the engine, trans, etc., but I am more worried about enjoying the car while I have it, not preserving it for the next owner. I bought the BMW because it is "sporty", so why waste your time in regular old gas saving D all day long?

I generally just put mine in drive, sport mode for me is too tempting and every time I've gotten pulled over I've been in sport mode, plus I cannot for the life of me get the car moving smoothly in sport mode. When I do drive in something other than "D" I use M mode, usually with 2nd or 3rd gear starts

also don't forget that when in DS the X5 wont select top gear you only get 1-4 or 1-5 depending if you have a 5 or 6 speed box.
