'06 4.8is tire wear questions

Hey fellow X5ers, I am noticing some tire wear that strikes me odd. The front tires are wearing on the outer edges more than the rest - this is a minor issue for me.

The rears though. They are showing quite a bit of tread depth on the inside edge and outside edge, but strangely they are wearing quite a bit in the middle! This is opposite of what I would think since I know the 4.8is is running some negative camber. Any thoughts? Is this just me being new to the 4.8is and is one of those, "welcome newbie" type of things??

Thanks in advance

p.s when I get ready to replace, I was contemplating the Michelin Latitude HP's and if anyone has any experience with those please let me know. According to the tirerack, they look to have better performance and treadlife than the Diam's and Advan's...

More wear in the middle normally indicates incorrect tyre pressure. Your rear tyres are probably overinflated.

That's exactly what I thought as well, but I've checked them every other fill-up and they are right where the door jamb indicates.

This would apply for none high preformance tires,
In this case it is other way around, to little PSI.
Recomended PSI is a balance betwean comfort and tireware (more comfort).
Go to a professional that works with tires and ask what is the optimal tire pressure for the type that you have. I would say that you should have somwhere betwean 40 and 45 PSI

Have the same issue with rear Michelin's. Wears out right in the middle.
Surprisingly do not see the same with 20" Pirelli's that I use in the winter. Wheels are balanced and tires properly inflated.

Just remember that there are several "factors" to tire wear: tire pressure, balance, alignment and driving style. I just replaced my OEM Diamaris' at 37,000 mi - was getting significant wear on the rears inside edge. Just had the 4-wheel alignment done and it was far enough out of spec to have contributed to this wear pattern.

BTW put Latitude Tour HP's on, but it is too early to tell - will be taking a 1500 mi trip this week, so will have something to report.

And, I bet this Thread gets moved to the Tire & Wheel Forum.

My tires do the exact same thing, it was recommended to lower my tire pressures, but I think it's too late for my tires

Hi all

The answer to your question lies in the suspension. As some may recall, I had a number of issues with the rear suspension of my 4.8is collapsing, and I had a motor engineer assess the vehicle as part of my pending court case with BMW Australia.

In his report, he noted that there appeared to be suspension geometry changes occuring during cornering that were causing the tyres to be scrubbed in the centre. Close examination of the tyres found lateral wear in the centre of the tyre.

I got the tyre manufacturer out and their report confirmed that the tyre was not at fault, and neither was the pressure, due to the wear pattern.

As I settled with BMW, the issue was not tested any further, and I moved out of the vehicle.

If I recall correctly, the tyres moved to 'toe out' when cornering....

Cheers

PS. I found this thread as I was searching for results on unusual tyre wear for our new E70.... go figure

Grrrr blasted rear tire issue again. It's doing the same thing - wearing more in the middle vs the outer edges. Here's a pic of my Michelin Latitude. Any suggestions? I may need to take the beast in to see if they have any suggestions also.

Curious what they say if you take it in. Have you otherwise been happy with the Latitude's performance?

Btw, for others of you running the Mich Latitudes, are you happy with them?
I'd like to avoid the summer/winter tire and wheel change and get a good all around all season tire, do these fit the bill? Am about to pull the trigger. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated..
