Talking Please help this tinting retard

OK, I'm clueless about tinting. I did a forum search, but it hasn't really answered my questions.

I'd like to get some tinting done, but want to keep it legal so as not to deal with the cops. Do the laws vary state to state?

What is legal in NJ? Also, is it OK (from an aesthetics standpoint) to just do the rear windows and the hatch window? Or should I get a full tint all around to make it look uniform?

Stan -

I believe NJ is NO TINTS on the fronts. Backs and rear there are no restrictions.
Rears or Hatch - due to clear front windows, I think OEM is fine....as there is a slight film on them already.

The Chef is pretty much Right On:

New Jersey Window Tint Law

New Jersey Tint Law Enacted: 2003
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW JERSEY?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New Jersey, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield: No tint is allowed on the windshield.
Front Side Windows: No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows: Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window: Any darkness can be used.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN NEW JERSEY?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.

Front Side Windows: No metallic or mirrored appearance.
Back Side Windows: No metallic or mirrored appearance.

OTHER NEW JERSEY RULES AND REGULATIONS
Restricted Colors: No colors of tint are explicitly banned.
Side Mirrors: Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
Certificate Requirements: Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker Requirements: No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
Medical ExemptionState allows medical exemptions for special tint.
For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.

Thanks a bunch for the quick responses fellas!

I defintely need to pursue this option since my 5-year old is suffering from the bright sun glare in his rear seat. I'm just wondering if the X is going to look retarded with tints on the back side windows and zero tint on the front side windows?

Nope, not from what I can tell. I don't have the Sport package, maybe that's why?

Hands down Auto Image in East Brunswick, NJ off Route 18. I think his name is Gary. Did great work on my old Integra and does plenty of great aftermarket add-ons as well. His lot is always filled with Escalades, Mercedes and of course an X5 once I saw. Good luck.
