Changed the sensor, bracket, and arm. A lot easier to install then to remove for sure. Light is still on, but it might have to get reset, i will go see my indy mech tomorrow and get it reset.

Will update.

Maybe the wirring harness between the module and sensor...
I'l lhave mine changed today. The dealer told me module performs auto test after each key cycle. Your message should have disapeared after installation...
Will keep you posted.

Hi,

There are 5 BMW dealers around Montreal. Not tested them all yet but I'm very pleased with "Parc Avenue" in Borssard eventhough they are not close to my place, not even on my way to work. There is a new dealership that opened few months ago. Their agenda is not booked 3 months in advance yet... convenient!
I have a BMW specialist I really trust in my suburb (Beaconsfield, West Island). He is not "certified" but it does not seem to influence customers as I saw a brand new 2008 M5 there last month . Rates are half the price of BMW!!
PM me for contact info.

Also know a more "underground" BMW mechanic with all equipement (including DIS). He used to work for a dealer.

I bought the level sensor on my X last sunday and was also disapointed to see the "Selflevel Susp Inac." full time with left and right blinking arrows. message. Guess what. IT DISAPEARED TODAY

Decided to dissect my faulty level sensor. It was full of water and rust...

Now I understand...

BTW, prior opening it, I noticed the part# was different from the one I bought at dealer :
1 093 698 (build 25.08.04) for the old one
6 778 812 for the new one

Yeh it looks pretty rough. My arm would not spin freely anymore. But it is still giving me the self level error and the code is coming up with the right sensor. i checked the pins and they are not rusted so im not sure :/

Part number 6 778 812 superceeds all the older part numbers which is why you got that one, which is the same one i ordered.

I might be interested in that bmw info, i'll let you know. ty.

sorry if this is long. But, airlevel just plain sux.

About a month ago, I had a slight knocking sound from the front left. Got under car to see if anything was loose. Noticed that both front outside CV boots were very cracked and leaking. Called a number of dealers in the area. The closest being about a 3 hour round trip. No CPO coverage for this. So, having done this many times in other cars, and not trusting any local "muffler shop" to do it, I set about taking care of this. CV joints still in great shape, so just cleaned and repacked new grease and new inside and outside boots. Job well done. So, back to trying to figure out the knocking sound. Still cant find anything, sound getting louder. Now notice the front left now riding lower than the other side. Handling now isnt right. After a couple of days of this, driving myself crazy with it. The dreaded "selflevel inactive" light now comes on, and doesnt go away.

Ok, now its time to do the trip to the Stealer. Cancel a good number of patients to do this. Now they are ticked at me. Cant blame them. BMW service "Tech" tell me that the sensor was installed incorrectly when the axles were replaced. Ok, I tell them the axles were not replaced. Original part stickers still on them. Only the boots were replaced. And, BTW, the sensor was never touched. If it was installed incorrectly it was done at the dealer where I purchased the thing. After lots of discussion, still dont get a descent explanation on why the sensor is incorrectly installed, when I never touched it. So, ok. Giving the benefit of doubt, and burning daylight, I told them to do what they have to do, I will pay for it. Dinged 500 bucks later for just readjusting the ride height sensors, and reprograming computer, sensors in good shape. Since its in, also get level II service along with some door ding removal. Total 1600 bucks.

After ten days same knocking noise is coming back, and getting louder. Ride height now lower on the left front again, handling poorly again. But now, no dreaded "selflevel inactive" light for now anyway.

Ticked that nobody believed me that I never touched the sensor, ticked that I spent 500 bucks for them to readjust the sensors, and I am in the same place I was before. Also ticked that after two days, my Email to the general manager at H------k BMW has not gotten back to me on this. My wife's GERMAN made 330ci with 90k on it has never given us problem one. As fun as the 4.8is is to drive when its right, I dont think this is over come by the problems.

Alright I have the same problem now but I wanted to get some input. Every single pixel on my dash is completely burned out so I'm not seeing the Self Leveling Suspension error message, but I walked out to my car and the left rear was dumped. However as soon as I start my car, it raises back up. (this has happened 3 times this week)
I'm HOPING it's also just the sensor like yours but has anyone experienced any problems with the actual airbag/strut being messed up or needing replacement?

I'm going to give the sensor a shot since it's cheap, but another question I have is, where is the pump located? Or what fills the shocks with air? Is it an air suspension? What controls the ride height/leveling? I just want to check and see if there are any leaks in the lines?

Oh also, someone mentioned a fuse. Where can I look for the fuse that control this?

Thanks guys.

Sorry for not updating this thread. I changed the left side (same parts) and the error code cleared by itself after a short drive, havn't seen it on since! Saved a lot of $ as well
