I used to put in 87 but then i noticed that i was supposed to use 91 so one time I had half tank of 87 in the X and i put in 91 for the other half. It gave a better average but then after that i started to use 91 permanently. Now i might try 89 and see how it goes.

I always use premium. I once put in 87 by accident, and my check engine light came on. I had only put in 10 or 15 dollars, so next time, I filled up with premium. My check engine light did go out after a while using the premium.

hmm not to point out the obvious but in the UK, there's only two grades of fuel, Petrol and Diesel. Does this imply that all petrol there is 92 octane?

I remember someone in the past posting something about at one of the local meets in VA area, the Service manager of Fairfax BMW (I think) said that they recommend premium but you can def get away with using mid-grade. I will try and find that post and add it.

I have 2004 4.4

There is a sticker on your fuel lid that asks for 91 or higher. I always put 93. The difference between 87 and 93 is about what?? 30-40 cents per/gallon??
I think that X5 has a tank of 25 gal. 25*.40= $10 USD. My X does 350-375 miles per tank. 10/350= .03 = 3 cents per/mile.

THAT IS: You'll be saving 3 cents per/mile if you put sh#% oops I mean 87 into your tank.

Common guys? Still want to save some money? Don't drive it!

And what's up with some of those questions I read on this forum lately : 1. How can I get better MPG?
2. How can I save on gas?
3. Will the chip on ebay work?

What were you thinking when you bought your X? It's not a 2-cycle Moped.

Still want your X to get a better MPG? Change a "gasket" between a seat and a steering wheel!

B.
