On my 2001 that is the sunglass holder and it doesn't have those vents

I believe it is part of the electronics for the sunroof. The motor for the panoramic roof is a little larger and I believe it goes in that spot. On non pano roofs we get sun glass holders...

The section that has the vents contains the ultrasonic module for the alarm, to monitor movements inside your cabin. Prior to the introduction of the pana roof, this ultrasonic module was housed in the rear passenger overhead compartment. Since the pana roof requires a big chunk of the overhead, BMW moved the module to the front overhead compartment, where it used to be the sunglass holder.
