Had the same problem with 3 of 4 handles (covers were fine). I simply popped off the cover, sanded the handles down, taped off the doors and spray painted. They turned out great, I was very pleased with the outcome and thought this was way easier than having to remove all the door panels. Good luck!

Did they redesign these at all such that a new set won't peel again in the future? If not, has anyone come up with a DIY fix? On this expensive of a vehicle (original selling price), this crap shouldn't happen, imho.

Seems not to be as common in later model 2005+ X5's. I think they improved the part.

Good to hear. I'll get some ordered up and replace them when I go into the doors (have some other jobs in there anyway). Thanks!

You'll have to remove the door panel in order to replace it.

The following article explains how to remove the door panel
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=75

the part you'd have to buy is item number 4

I just bought a set and they run at appr 35USD

- Jan
Could you post where you got the part? I need to fix mine.

You can find the part numbers at www.realoem.com/bmw under the section:
VEHICLE TRIM => DOOR TRIM PANELS/LATERAL TRIM PANELS

Match it up for front/rear doors as needed. As he mentioned, it's part #4 in those diagrams (the handles themselves). Should then be able to source from your favorite BMW parts source.
