My X is testing my patience (and checkbook)

'01 X5 3.0, 135K miles. I spent about $4-5K on her last year with maintenance and repair issues. Wife was driving her this weekend and the infamous tranny failsafe light comes on. Wife says it is driving fine at highway speed and gets to the house with no issues. I turn it off, turn it back on, light is gone until I put it in gear and take off. No limitation on speed, but it seems to be clunking into each gear, up and down.

I really love this vehicle and was hoping to get at least 200K miles out of her, but after what I spent on her last year and now looking at a possible new tranny, I just question if I need to keep sinking money into her.

Even made it harder when I saw the commercial this morning for a new Grand Cherokee with 60-month 0% financing, free nav, and lifetime powertrain warranty...

That's lifetime of Chrysler, not the vehicle.

As if you didn't already know trans failure was an eventuality.

Replace it and you'll probably be good well past 200k.

Dawg,
I understand your patience running out and, concern over what is the next shoe that drops, repair-wise.

No idea of your financial situ/needs, but here's my 25Cts: it's normal to
get to a point with a car where one sez, "I'll toss the sumbitch and get
a new one". Normal...my only admonition is even a few grand a year,
the car one owns is the least expensive car available. If you want/need/
gotta have a new ride, well there are a couple dozen rationales, all of
which make sense.

It's your pick, but I agree with V on the trans fix...and, JCL's comment
is right up there in RackIt territory, imo.
Good luck with whatever car situ you decide on...

7 years old, plus 135,000 miles......this is inevitable and $4,000 in maintenance at that age isn't all that much IMO.

It is 7yrs old - maintenance seems reasonable to me.

You could just trade it in for a new X5 and lease for ~$800/month and then have no maintenance costs.

similar expirence

I had the same problem about 5k ago, my 03, 3.0,(auto).. 125k. the tranny fail safe light came on and my shifting was very rough and kinda slammed from gear to gear... I took it to the dealer, It was explained to me that the tranny was just protecting itself and I shouldnt get to worried until it starts to slip or feels like it has peanut butter in it.... they ended up replacing the "transmission shift Module" ....( I will have to check on the exact name of the part that was installed, and I will see what they charged me..) and they gave me a software upgrade, it took them about 3 days and off memory I think it cost around $1,800. but it has been running smoothly ever since... even though I love my X and rely on her as my daily driver...I am saving up cause I feel as if a major repair is always just around the corner..

Thanks for all the replies - believe me the last thing I want to do is get rid of the X.

Drove it to the shop this morning - no failsafe light. He is going to go ahead and pull the codes just in case. I'll keep you updated.

Zacman, I hope that is all it is - you give me some hope!!
