Low Coolant Level - 2001 4.4i

Hope someone can shed some light...

I keep getting a low coolant light warning. The dlr told me X5's use a lot of coolant and should bring it in to get it topped off. I did and them after a 3,200 mile trip it came on again. Had it topped off again, thought it was the long trip, and 2 weeks later, after normal use, the coolant level warning is back. No leaks that I can see underneath or on the engine.

Any ideas, could the sensor need replacing or should I have the pressure checked for a pin hole leak.

Seems that a pressure test is probably the way to go when the leak isn't obvious. Obviously, check for visible leaks, especially at the expansion tank and hoses. Some have had leaks at the water pump or valley pan.

Search and maybe you'll get more insight. Good Luck!

Weasel will become famous soon enough
Wherever there's a small leak is that evaporates before dripping, it leaves a whiteish residue. If you don't se any signs of leaking then it might be a hidden leak lilke the valley pan. It is damn hard to see enough down there under the intake to see the leak...

Cool The Dreaded Cracked Expansion Tank Failure

Sounds like you are yet another victim of BMWs design faults.

Thanks Gravy.

I cleaned up the engine and will watch for leaks this weekend. Sounds like I have some work to do...

I, too, had a low coolant warning @104k on an '00 4.4i. Had to have valley pan gasket replaced.
