At the moment there is a bit of a problem with fuel supplies in Scotland, so I have been trying to conserve as much as possible. I have increased my mileage by 2mpg over the last week, and by doing one thing.

On short trips I have not been caning the X5 as I normally do - it is these trips that kill your mileage.

Interestingly I have noticed that the cars that overtake me on the 6 mile journey to my kids nursery, end up approximately 10-15 seconds ahead of me at the interchange 5 miles down the road (due to traffic tailing back) - I have been driving nice and sedately at 60mph (on the cruise control), I am less stressed out and there is no noticeable difference in journey time.

clearly when I want to have fun I still cane Xena and use M on the gearbox.

So chill out on your commute and see how the mileage improves.

I have to agree with you. Since I have been trying to drive more conservatively I have had somewhat of a different mentality. Much less aggressive, if you will. I am much more calm and relaxed when driving more slowly and letting others zip past me coming out of a light. And, as you mentioned, only to roll right up next to them 2 minutes later at the next light!!

What is the point of the lawn chair driving position?

I find that driving with cruise ON,I lose a few mpg,as when ithe road starts to climb the engine seems to power up more as if it was OFF,i would speed up a little before the hill and ease of the gas a little...........
DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?

Yes I agree I find that the cruise will cause the car to down shift, when it could take the hill in high gear if it just let it slow down a little.

Sitting in a proper driving position rather than having your seat reclined so you can look out the rear windows would be a start at taking driving seriously. Your rear passengers would probably appreciate it (assuming they are thin... remember are ditchingthe chubs for fuel economy)

after this thread i started driving more mindfully and was able to average 22 on the highway. Considering it was rush hour, i'd say that was pretty positive as i normally run a stark 17mpg on the same route. Mind over matter i say

Putting the car in n and rolling to stop (red light) also helps.

I went to an extreme and just ordered a 2009 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. This thing is supposed to get 4.8L/100kl on the highway. The X5 will go up for sale when it arrives in October. It will be a sad day when I sell it.
