Is it time to Sell?

Hi All,

Just wanted to get some suggestions from High Milage X5 Owners, I have a 2005 X5 4.8is (Not the original owner) and it has now 80K miles on it, it's been pretty good so far Allmost 35K miles since i bought it, however i just did some work on it (Shocks/sealing sleeve and gasket ...Fluid added for transmission also Steering Fluid Leaking slightly, have to check which Hose/Clamp and replace them)

Now I am wondering if this is the start of many things to break? anything to look out for? I absolutely love driving it however if it ends up breaking my Bank, might as well sell it now...what do you guys think?

In my opinion if you are a DIYer then you can keep it otherwise it will become TOO expensive to maintain it going to a mechanic.

if you don't have on average $2000 a year to put away for repairs, the 4.8is is the wrong car for you. these cars are expensive to operate and maintain. you are getting to a mileage bracket where you could expect some major repairs if they have not been done ie. cooling system, shocks, rear carrier bushings, engine/tranny mounts and transmission. good luck.

Just keep it i was in the same situation my car have around 120K decide to sell it but the best offer i got in 4 month was 15K so for that much money i am keeping it. Just take a good care of it and it will as reliable as the car with 40K. Once you take care of some major components that's seems to go bad on all of the cars you good.

What would you buy instead? Thinking about a car note? Count the cost. There
is no free ride. Fix everything and keep it but don't stop banking money for
future repairs, or buy something else and be forced to pay someone else for
what you buy and if it's used you'll pay for the repairs also.

You got some major maintenance coming up. If you're not a DIYer, it'll be expensive.

Thanks all for your response,
Fmugur - I am not a major DIY'er but can do some of the minor work (No way Transmission or Big Engine Stuff).
Dinan e39 - Yes i have come to realize that these cars are $$ to maintain, i can swing 2k/yr (as long as i have a job), but not sure if i should keep an upper limit say put aside 5K and if it goes above that then sell...Pondering over that, not even sure if that logic makes sense (the 5K one)
Quicksilver - Most likely i would not buy any car at all (i have a 2004 325xit which technically should be cheaper to repair and my daily beater 2002 mitsu eclipse) as any other car (in my budget) is just not that much fun to drive.
aferistik - That is something i might do if the repairs are not huge as i absolutely love the car.

You have a few options at this point...

1) sell before the big ticket items hit (trans failure)
2) buy an extended warranty
3) take a chance and keep driving it

You can always list it for sale and see if you get a solid offer.

Or maybe sell one of your other 2 cars to help pay for repairs? Make the 325 the daily beater and sell the clipse? who needs 3 cars anyway, maintaining 3 cars for one person is what is eating up your budget for repairs.

oh and if its 3 cars in a household with a wife and/or kids, DISREGARD my statement
