What's up with my Inspection 2 ??
I dropped my 2002 3.0 X5 off at the dealership last night because the Inspection indicator came on last week (58k miles). The dealer is in Sterling, VA.
I received a call this morning to let me know that the service was not covered by any warranty (which I was aware of) and that it was a very comprehensive look at the car (oil, filter, differential fluid etc...) and that it would cost just under $1300 after parts & labor. I've read in the past that $500-$700 was a pretty standard Inspection 2 expense, why the heck are these guys saying it will be double that?

It's called make "Inspections" a profit center for the stlr ship...
I'd drive it away, print out the Insp ll list from this site, take it to an Indie and let them "inspect" it and change the oil/filter(s), for 500-600. GL,mD

That's basically what I'm doing. I've been going to a very good shop for almost 4 years now, and they have a couple of BMW certified mechanics in their shop. They also have the same computer as the dealer for diagnosing necessary services. I just called them and ran down the list of everything I need done, and he's working up an estimate now. It will undoubtedly be nearly 50% of the dealer cost.
If anybody in the Northern VA area is looking for a great shop with reasonable labor rates, check out Franconia Shell in Springfield/Kingstowne VA.

$1,300 is a lot for an oil/filter change and a car wash.
Like MD said, go to a good Indie who you trust will actually go through the checklist ...or do it yourself, it's not that hard. |
