Well I thought that topping up with the bleed screw opened up solved it when I drove around the neighborhood. On my drive up the highway (long trip) the same "Check Coolant Level" came on. Perhaps I'd not warmed up in the neighborhod? Anyway I'm at the destination hotel now. I'll take the "complimentary" bottle of water and top it up in the morning. I'll plug in tomorrow and look for more updates/ideas.

wait...you said you took them apart earlier? Did you remove the sensor too by any chance?

Nice DIY! One nit-pic point. In step 4 it's Torx bit not Torque bit. I'm sure everyone knows what you meant since you included a photo.

I have a bmw scanner1.36 and read some where about an update to 1.40, i need to know if any one used it and if have the software please would be very apreciated if can send me this software(1.4)so i can compare with my recent one. i have dowloaded a demo but it was useless. by the way i have a very big variaty of remote key programing for almost all cars, if any one need them i'll be happy to send.

I think I meant earlier in the day (age related recall failure). I did at least remember to re-attach the sensor earlier in the day. Today I drove to the training class this morning, Check Coolant Level came on. At lunch break I took a 16.9 oz. water bottle and topped it up. This evening drove back to the hotel, be darned if 16.9 ounces H2O didn't do the trick. I think my "ugh" came from not knowing about the little bleed valve to the right of the fill cap. (When I originally drained the radiator with the bleed valve closed the fluid splattered all over the garage floor - a clean up project of its own!). All's well here in "Balmer" (Baltimoron-talk).

Thermostat & Water Pump DIY
Update on my project. This past Saturday I spent 8 hours replacing the water pump and the thermostat. While in there I replaced the belts and the hoses. Great DIY from bimmer360, thanks pinoy! I'd like to add a couple of points for the 3.0i owners out there.
The optional BMW tool - buy it (I broke the first screwdriver)

1) remove the radiator by properly draining ALL the fluid from the radiator and the engine
2) find the torque specs ahead of time (part of why it took 8 hours)
3) do NOT over-torque any of the nuts, bolts, etc (I may have but so far knock on wood, no problems)
4) the belts are really easy to change out, take a picture for reference before you remove them or you may find Rubic's cube disguised as an X5 fan belt!
5) most important, take your time. When you finish, crack open a nice cold beer and toast your success.

I have never done my own work on my car (to this extent) prior to reading this board. The knowledge shared here is invaluable!
