resistance when rolling-out/step off gas

recently have noticed that whenever I step off the gas pedal, there seems to be some sort of resistance and the speed drops off much faster than usual.

this only happens occasionally and not at all times, but seems quite odd. as if I was v. slightly braking, but I am not. The RPM is generally above 1K when this happens, whereas for smooth rolling, I believe it is 0.5K RPM? But I am not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Usually I could roll for a long time when I reach like 30 mph and now I can see and feel how the speed drops off much quicker it doesnt feel nice at all. What could be the problem here?

Could you be going up hill? Just kidding.

The trans is probably in different gears. Lower gear = more engine braking, increased engine speed, quicker stopping. Higher gear = less engine braking, decreased engine speed, less slowing.

I've noticed the same issue recently and from past experience with transmission issues I'm starting to fear that it may be a sign that my tranny is going out. Normally when rolling to a stop without throttle the transmission should shift into the highest possible gear to allow the car to roll freely, now it seems like it wants to stay in whatever gear its in (usually 3rd or 4th) and not shift up. I'm having my tranny fluid and filter replaced next week and hopefully it will clear up some issues, although I fear it may not. If it were to be a failing tranny and I end up needing a new one what are my chances of BMW covering it under "good faith" warranty seeing as my car only has 80k?

hi

hi, yes I agree, this is the same problem I have.
the trans doesnt shift to the proper gear when rolling, the gear seems too low. in manual mode i just put it into a higher gear and its fine again.

sure this is a transmission issue that means the trans is dying?
what part of the trans would be affected by this?

how about a software reset, would this work?
I have had the oil and filter changed, but for me it made no difference, actually its only after the change that I have noticed this problem for the first time.

any update on this? has your problem improved?

should I do more than one flush of the transmission?

I still wonder if overheating my car due to clogged up cooling system has caused damage to my transmission. in that time, the gearbox missed a lot of gears whenever it became too hot and I didnt know it was a cooling issue. After the cooling system was fixed, gearbox changes were ok except this problem with low gear off-throttle occured and I am not sure how to fix it and what it could be related to.

service was carried out as well incl filter change but this problem seems to occur only now after all this has been fixed/done.

Just a thought but, could your brake caliper(s) be going bad or staying engaged and causing your unusal idle roll?

easy way BUT very painful way to check is touch the rotors, if the caliper is intermittently sticking, that side should be hotter than other sides ask how I know

... just use a ir thermometer

I had the same problem...for me it was the driver's front wheel...I applied brakes but when i took my foot off the brake pedal it would still be engaged on that wheel.

The disk was a diff. color than the other wheels, and also you could feel heat coming...
