New to the forums.
Hello all,
My name is Justin, I currently drive a 2001 Audi S4. It's a full Stage 3 car good for low 12's maybe high 11's, it's lowered 3in on full track suspension and has more upgrades than I can list. I track in often and I love it to death.... But with other things going on in life it's time to get rid of the sports car and get into something a little more practical. I am in the market for an X5 4.4i looking for what I can get in 2000-2003 area. Anything I should look out for while shopping. Any known common problems? Also what kind of upgrades are out there? I am addicted to the feeling of boost, anyone turbo or supercharge the 4.4? (so much for practical, lol) Suspension upgrades, Exhaust, Intake? I'm really new to the X5 world so I will have a ton of "noob" type questions.

Hi Justin,
Welcome. If you read through a few weeks of posts, you'll see common issues related to X5s. This link is helpful: http://www-ksl.stanford.edu/people/k..._problems.html You're in a buyer's market right now and you quickly realize that an X5 is far too fun to drive to consider "practical". Chris |

You'll love the X5 ..I have a 2004 and its been pretty much trouble free compared to the Audi (I also had a stage 3 s4 2001.5) and also have a B6 1.8t stage 3 (Gt28rs). There plenty of mods for the x5 and coming from the s4 the prices are about the same.

1st off, welcome! being a noob myself, I found great tons of info, DIY, maintenance stuff in here. 'Search' button is our friend. I too came from the world of boost coming from a subaru WRX with some go fast goodies. X5 is a completely different beast, and so far I'm enjoying mine - not even missing boost power. I'm sure someone else in here can chime in their opinion and perhaps give you advice with what you're looking for. Again - Welcome to X5World. Happy Motoring!

![]() Do a quick search, 2004 had a new 4.4 motor available and X-Drive (a better AWD system). Transmissions, in auto form, are also a weak point in the X5. As for FI, there is a SC one running around here somewhere but I don't believe a turbo setup has been done ![]()

I think you will be happy with the power of a 4.4. I came from an e36 M3 and am satisfied. I am getting pretty decent gas milage with 18.5 combined. The 4.6 chew up a lot of gas compaired to the 4.4.
As far as turboing... Not happening on an X. Supercharging is an option. Very pricey. www.dinanbmw.com Dinan, if you didnt know is probably the very best and also most expensive tuning products specifically designed for BMW's. Intake.. aFe intakes seem to be the norm. Exhaust.. Dinan has one, superprint, Remus. Lots of others. Suspension: If you get an X with Sport suspension ie (black window trim) you wont want to upgrade it. Its firm and very sporty/fun. If you get one without sport (chrome window trim) like mine.. It will leave you wanting an aftermarket suspension. Glad to convert any Audi customer to BMW. My girlfriend just got another Audi (A5) because she knew it would piss me off lol. Check out Bimmer magazine in Barns and Noble for some good reading material on bimmers as well.
