I went around and around with my taillights for over a year. I finally replaced both assemblies for about $300, and have lived happily ever after (i.e. it was worth it).

Thanks for your input guys, have had a look this weekend and found that the right side has a burned out portion where the bulb holder contacts would sit. And the other side has a blown bulb (tail light). Going to put some solder in the right side and perhaps get a new tail light bulb for the left!!

i took the taillight assembly off and found that the metallic fingers that is use to deliver current is also being used to hold down the bulb socket to the light assembly. one hint was that the bulb socket was easy to twist off.
the melted plastic rivit (sp?) was broken.
if you can easily twist the the bulb socket assembly, you may have the same problem. the weatherproofing foam may be assisting the broken rivit and enabling "light" contact pressure.

I am having the same issue, if you ever found a fix, please let me know. I have a feeling it is contacts but tried sanding and still no drivers tail light.
