Engine MARBLE Can sound
Finally I've got rid of this terrible sound that bothers too much people who has BMW X5 !!!! I've read tons of articles on the Internet trying to find a solution. No use. Either those guy who knows the Secret simply don't want to share the knowledge or nobody could manage to fix this problem. This is the f****** Rubber Mounting. Look at it! ![]() It got worn and caused a lose connection, which allowed Hydro-Steering-oil pipe ![]() to rattle, to knock, to jingle. This sound has been driving me crazy for the whole last year. I've personally spent almost $1,000 for nothing paying BMW Service mechanics who either know NOTHING or just want to earn as much as possible on fixing what mustn't be fixed. Everybody! If you have a MARBLE CAN sound coming from an engine bay while accelerating or going up-hill at 2,200 and 3,000 rpm you should check the condition of Rubber Mounting first. You don't even think of VANOS, Knock/Ping Sensor, Timing Chain Tensioner, Spark Plugs, Vacuum stuff, Oil thickness, Fuel Filter, Engine Management Control (EMC), O2 Sensor, and etc. Check the Rubber Mounting! It may ease your life right away. If so, please, let me know. Moontoosoon |

Rubber thingy, also known as the vibration damper. P/N: 32416778960
To successfully use RealOEM, select your vehicle, engine, year, then scroll through the groupings list until you find something that might, perhaps, pertain to what your looking for. In this case, the power steering vibration damper was cleverly hidden under "steering"... It was also in the first post...

Just an FYI...here's another example as to WHY it's important to create a signature or add your X5's model/model year/build date info.
The OP found a solution to a sound/rattle issue (which can be difficult to isolate)...but they give NO information as to WHICH engine, WHICH model, WHAT model year etc. And they also don't indicate what part of the world they reside, so that even complicates matters more...in that the "engine" mount could be for any of the 7 e53 X5 engines. To all that have NO model/model year/build date info...please consider helping the forum by adding vital information that informs anyone that may run across your posts/threads now and in the future as to your set-up. This helps others to know if the solution can work for them or where to look for the issue or parts...or where to look in the parts diagram etc. ![]() Which engine/model e53 does the OP have? The writing is so blurry on the diagram they posted...I can't tell what it says. ![]() ![]() EDIT: okay, I could read that the orig diagram was of the hydro-steering oil pipes...so I looked up that diagram for my 06 4.4 and the vibration damper is #8 in the diagram below. When I cross referenced that part nbr...it appears to be used on all the e53 X5 models plus some other BMW models as well as Rolls Royce models:

I replaced this part and it had no effect on the noise. I previously replaced the a/c and power steering pulleys and it had no effect.
Then two days ago I got a CEL and found a hole in the inner manifold, so had it replaced. The mechanic noticed a bad DISA valve when he was doing the work and replaced it also. Now the sound is gone -- it was the DISA valve all along!!! So if your X has a rattle under acceleration, check this valve. Apparently it fails all the time and probably should be replaced routinely at 100k along with the plugs. My car has 150k on the clock.

It is really important to check your DISA valve when you start hearing weird rattling noises in the engine compartment..had the DISA valve fail in my 02 E39 and didn't pay too much attention to the sound until one day when the metal pin that holds the flap broke off and was sucked into the manifold and down into the combustion chamber...at this point it's either rebuilt the engine or scrap it!
Btw, do n62 motors have a DISA ?
