quick question - engine oil
I just got done changing the oil in my 4.6. In the past i've used 5w30 or 10w30.
I was planning to use 10w30 today, but i accidentally used the wrong oil (meant for my other car) I put in 15w50. How is this going to affect the car? should i drain it and use 10w30 or will i be good? Car isnt daily driven, maybe on weekends only, however, i'll be towing my racecar next weekeend (about 250miles RT) Thanks Franklin

It is a significantly heavier weight then OEM recommends. I'd probably drain it and do it again

In your Houston ambient temps, I wouldn't blink...
your mpg may reduce a touch, due to the 50 top, but I doubt it, and I would not worry a lick. Withidl, a very knowledgeable ex-petro engineer, runs sim oil in his TX based X, pulls an airstream, etc. M cars come with 60 top viz and few see any driving other than freeways. Drive it and enjoy it, imo. GL,mD

It will not hurt your engine, you milage may be slightly less. I'd wait for the next scheduled oil change.

FJ, drain it into a clean container and throw it in the M3 next time it needs oil; no waste. 15W-50 is a ton more viscous that the factory spec.
Big J: Mobil1 0W-30 is a very thin oil. Towards the very bottom of the 30wt range; go with M1 5W-30. Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 is a very very good oil. All the Amsoil products (including Air Filters) are outstanding. |
