No experience with this on an X5, but lots of experience with what may be the same problem on other makes.
There are (at least) two interlocks preventing the shift lever from moving. One is the button on the gear lever. If it is not working correctly, pressing it may not completely clear the catch. That is unlikely, but possible. What is more likely is that the cable or rod from the brake pedal requires adjustment. If it feels just as if you haven't stepped on the brake (ie it is completely blocked from going P to D, or D to P) then it is likely that cable that requires adjustment. It can stretch. Not common, but common enough to be recognized. I don't know where the cable is attached, but opening up the shifter may show you.

Makes sense... but...
What i found out is that if I'd move the lever just a tad bit back (small amount or even left it alone) and then press the gear shift, it works just fine. I am thinking I may have just normally moved the lever a tad up because of the way the seating is and angle is to the gear shifter on the x5 from revs to Drive mode. |
