Removing the canopy bar.... How?

Ok, so it may not be called the canopy bar, but it's the bar that has the sliding sheet that covers your interior trunk.

sometimes, like today, i wanted to transport some big things and that bar got in the way after i had put the seats down. is there a function to release that bar? or is it a stationary thing? i couldnt find a release button anywhere.

thanks!

Ok..push the the cover all the way in the back....you can see where the gears go into the pocket area. Take you fist and hammer up from the bottom on each side...it pops out...It is in there tight, but you have to pop it up...The cover is not completely retracted...it will not come out.

On my 2001 I used to pull the 2 black little plastic pieces out on each side and then lift the cover. The whole cover used to come out. Reverse process for putting it back. It used to be pain sometimes to adjust the cover on the gears when putting back, good that they have changed it on my 2005.

i don't have my 01 x5 anymore.. sorry no pics nor do i remember how to do it... but there is a simple and easy way to disengage the locking mechanism/gears so you can remove that bar...

its either a button on either end that need to be pushed or tabs that need to be pulled...

I don't have my 2001 X5 either but it had those plastic things on each side (see pic from X5 manual below) You need to press and hold the little button on it and pull these things out on both sides and then lift the cover.
