Auto Shift Knob

For those who have replaced their shift knob, what is the center stem of the OEM shifter made of? I'm browsing fleabay and almost all of the shift knobs on there seems to be made of flimsy plastic center stem. I'm almost certain that the OEM is made of metal...can anyone confirm? Thanks.

It is a gray plastic. I just looked at the pictures of my OEM trim when I removed it. The thing I remember most though is almost giving myself a black eye yanking that thing up.

Thanks for the confirmation. So the shaft of the OEM knob is actually plastic (see attached picture)? I've always thought it would be metalic of some sort being that you wouldn't want the knob to break off in your hand while the car is stuck in gear.

I remembered reading one of your post about the free "black eye" option that comes with this mod. That's one of the reason why I'm somewhat hesitant about doing the mod.
