It's been several years since I installed the OEM hitch on my E53, but as I recall there was a significant difference in the bumper carriers

If you're referring to the part of the installation that the bumper attaches to, that part comes with the factory hitch kit. You will need all the parts that came with the factory hitch since it's pretty complete, even including the wiring module.

You ABSOLUTELY have to have the carrier designed for the hitch. The problem is if you cannot get it from him, you might have trouble finding one. My repairs on my X were delayed a couple of weeks bc the hitch-specific carrier is on national backorder - they couldn't even get one from Germany. Finally found one at some dealer in the US.

Understood; however, is a new carrier included in the kit because the hitch kit does not fit with the existing bumper carrier? I had taken my bumper cover off a few months ago to drill out PDC holes, and saw the existing carrier. If it's materially different that the one seen on the OEM hitch kit, then I'd rather just buy the kit new from the dealer, rather than have the seller send all the pieces and wait to have my existing carrier sent back to him for a swap. The shipping cost alone on that would probably negate any savings.
FWIW, I have an 04 4.4i.

Yes, you can assume that the new carrier is materially different. I recall that it was from my install, but I don't have side by side pictures. If the seller has not installed the hitch, no problem. However, if it is on his vehicle the whole exercise (including uninstalling, and shipping your carrier back to him) sounds like more trouble than it is worth. If the seller has installed the hitch, he may have kept his original carrier; most of us left them laying around our garages for some period of time before we threw them out.
While I haven't tried to install the hitch with the original (non hitch) carrier, I can't imagine that it would work. There is no way BMW would have spent so much money shipping around those chunks of steel to dealers if they didn't have to do so to enable the bumpers to be reinstalled.
