2005 3.0i Simple Mods
I am new to the 3.0 X5's. Are there any simple mods to increase power a bit? Also, beyond the freebie mods, what would be a 1st stage upgrade to the 3.0 engine?

if you want a little roar, go with CAI like afe or K&N. If you want power, go with the dinan package.

Hmm so perhaps the best way to improve performance on a 3.0 would be to reduce weight.. I notice the only time my car really feels slow (to me) is when i have 3 or 4 other people with me.

pardon me jumping in ( I'm here for the nav, 323 and 530) but the time honored way is changing the rear end ratio, the differential. That will give you significantly more power in all gears, especially noticeable in the low end i town. The price is lower top end(irrelevant) but also a bit faster engine speed at any road speed, slightly higher fuel consumption (?2mpg) and of course the expense initially. So the joke about small tires is right on, thats the poor man's
diff swap! Folks do them on the sedans I see, do you see much talk about it on here for Xs? thanks, I'll go back to my sedan cave now, but some day I will have me one of these. tom |

Ok, I drove a stock 3.0 from a local BMW lot this weekend....
....and I have to change my initial response to this thread. There is a noticeable difference with the Dinan CAI and ECU package. Eventhough the HP and TQ increase they tested at are relatively small, the car feels way smoother going through the powerband when you really get on the gas. I think i just got too used to it....Or maybe the addition of 22's slowed me down a bit? I also wish there was a less expensive alternative. |
