Bad Noise from Under the Hood

I have had my 2001 X5 since April 2004. I bought it off lease and also bought an extended warranty. I have kept the maintenance up and always listen closely to any changes in the way the car sounds or handles. etc.

The other morning, I heard a purring noise shortly after starting the car that got worse as I drove, and was louder at idle and faded when I was actually accelerating/driving. I went right back home and when I went back to start the car later, horrible lound noice from under the hood.

I can't tell if it is the engine or a belt but am very concerned because i love my car and have taken good care of it. I have an appointment with BMW on Tuesday, but was wondering if anyone can ease my fears or if this sounds familiar to anyone..

purrring noise? Could you explain further? Like something caught in the fan blades or rubbing the blades? Were is it coming from in the engine bay?
