Dinan S2 4.6is vs 4.8is
I am looking at pre-owned, so I have seen that mostly the 4.6is are 10-20k less. I know there have been a couple of post about this already, but they didnt specify a whole lot. The Dinan website says the s2 package for the 4.6 raises the hp to 369 and the torque to 382. So I am just wondering why would the 4.6is dinan s2 and the 4.8is be a wash in straight line accerlation . The 4.8is has 14 less horsepower, 13 less feet of torque, and weighs approximately 190 more pounds. Compared to the 4.6is Dinan s2. Maybe I read some inaccurate post, but why would these to x5s be equal as far as acceleration. So what would you guys rather have, for $10,000 less have a fully loaded 4.6is dinan s2, or a fully loaded 4.8is for $10,000 more. I know that the 4.8is are just awsome, with the self leveling and the new pan. sun roof. Oh another question is how do the 4.8 and 4.6 compare to the ford f150 lightning??

steptronic 5 speed vs 6 in the 4.8.. the gearing plays a major role.

tough one. i thought there was an article comparing the s2 4.6 vs the 4.8 posted not too long ago, both were pretty much dead on the same performance wise...there were significantly less 4.6s sold than there are 4.8s, so it really boils down to a) if you wanna save the 10k b) if you want the latest and baddest c)where the warranty mite stay the longest
good luck w/ your choice; i dont think you can go wrong either way...

That was the June 05 issue of Bimmer mag where they compared the Dinan 4.6 with 4.8.

If you have the cash to dish out for a 4.8is and would like to spend the money, you might as well go S3 w/ Supercharger or get the ESS Supercharger kit for the price difference. I know it might be a little over the 10k difference, but if you look around, you could probably get the 4.6 even cheaper. My .02.

You asked about comparing to a SVT Lightning. I assume you are talking straight line acceleration. I have owned 2 SVT Lightnings and currently own the 4.8is. The SVT is faster and easier to make real fast with the blower/chip/pulleys. I will admit I am very pleased when I give the 4.8 some gas. It has great torque and really moves. I do wish there were some mods that could make the 4.8 even more fun but my experience is most naturally aspired engines aren't easy to make go fast parts.

In the long run, the 4.8 might also be a better b/c:
1)resale value might be better b/c it has the current face lift. 2)Not really sure, but there might be a small difference in gas efficiency. 3) You will probably will have less problems with an unmodified car. I currently drive a 4.8 and love it more then anything else...to the point where I can't find any else worthy since I am looking for a second car for the family

My choice would be the 4.8. Keeps it simple with the naturally aspirated power plus you get the panorama roof. May also be more suitable for a daily driver.

I had the same decision to make when I bought my X5. Decided to go with a slightly used model (4.6is) and saved 25K over a brand new one. Numbers that are hard to argue with. (Also got three more years of CPO time + maintenance to boot). |
