A/C whine

Has anyone experienced a whinning sound in the engine compartment when the AC is engaged during engine startup or immediately upon startup. The sound whines (almost like a supercharger) with the engine, either in park, neutral, or drive. The strange thing is that the whinning sound grows softer and goes away after 15 minutes or so of operation. Also, if I wait about 1 or 2 minutes after starting up the engine before engaging the AC, then there's no whine of any sorts. The AC seems to operate just fine with or without the whine.

Is my compressor about to go south? Or am I just simply low on refrigerant?

HAD AN ENGINE WHINE it was all over the rpm range . to be honest it sounded like an old Ford pickup so they replaced the p/s pump. the old p/s pump was put back on when they realized it was the bearings in the alternator (water-cooled) and idler pulleys. strangely I hear this noise on Mercedes as well as they whine past so the alternator must be on a lot of cars.. 2005 4.8is blk/blk

I guessed our problem aren't the same. I only hear the whine when the AC is engaged upon startup as described previously. No whine otherwise.
