Thinking about getting an E53

Hey guys I'm new here so please forgive me for asking a stupid question. My wifes current car is taking a crap and I was thinking about replacing it with a 05 or 06 4.4 cpo. Is there anything I need to worry about or things to look for? I have a 01 330ci, my bro has a 01 M3 and my parents just got a 08 E70. So I'm not new to BMWs. Any info would really be appreciated.

Thanks Curley

Welcome to x5 world! Try a quick search from the search tab and alot of info should come up. It's quicker instead of waiting for others to respond. If you don't find what your looking for then for sure post your question.

The '06 I had was great. Unfortunately, my new townhouse(ie, money pit, my 1st) demanded sacrifice. But my '01 also runs great. The '06 was the last year of the E53, so I haven't heard of too many problems. This site is definitely where you want to be to learn about the E53. Good luck with your search.

ONLY go with a CPO. The transmissions and window regulators are very suspect in the E53. Other then that and some silly little issues (which you can find more details on by just reading some old posts) the E53 is pretty solid. Definitely my favorite of the BMW's I have had.

I have a 2005 4.4 X5 it has been great, the only issue has been the need to replace the variable value timing motor.

The rear hatch will squeak/rattle when it is cold and will need adjustment.

The 4.4 is the way to go it gets better mpg than the 3.0 and has more power.
My X5 has been great and I love it.

I would recommend getting one with a warranty if at all possible. Also, like with most cars, the newer model years tend to have a few more bugs worked out. I have an 02 4.4 and have had my fair share of maintenance issues, but overall I am happy with it. The X5 (especially with the sport package) handles and feels like a car and is also known to be quite safe.

Good luck with your search.
