Sales Tax when bought out of state

I read a posting that said there is no Sales Tax when purchasing out of state. Is this correct? I would be purchasing a CPO 2006 X5 in New York and am a NJ resident. Thanks.

Call the NJ DMV. I am sure there will be a tax of some kind.

It means no NY sales tax...from my fading memory, you have to declare
its fair value, (show a bill of sale), when titling/tagging in NJ.

We bought the CR-V in SC, no sales tax, but had to pay NC sales tax,
and the other MV taxes here in our home state.
As the poster above said, call DMV on Monday and get the bad news...

If it is anything like Maryland, you are hit with the sales tax when you register the car, not at the point of sale. So you will be taxed when you attempt to title/register the car. No avoiding the tax man.

I purchased my X in Florida and had it shipped to CA. When I registered it they popped $3500 in sales tax! Talk to your DMV they will give you a real number.

In my case, I bought in NH, no tax, and upon registration, you either provide proof you paid sales tax, or pay up on the spot.
If you paid 3%, they would charge you the remaining 2%, but AFAIK, if you paid like 8% (NY IIRC), you're SOL for the remaining 3%

The entire situation is averted by "delivering" the vehicle to the NY/NJ border, and the dealer won't collect tax at all, the state will at reg time.

You will have to pay the 7% when you go to the DMV. Btw, since you're in Princeton, have you visited the BMW on Route 1?

You pay the taxes in the state that your register the car. If you live in Oregon, then you pay 0 tax. It cost me about $90 for DEQ/tags for 2 years. Don't want to get into the "you're so lucky" train... Oregon makes up the revenue with other higher income and property taxes. They get there cut one way or another. Good for out of state shopper though!
