The tranny issue is actually more common in the 4.4, but 3.0 tranny's fail too. Everything else seems to be fair game..just fyi

The oil seperator and water pump will definitely fail, its not a matter of if, its a matter of when..and from my experience and others on this forum it is usually near 100k miles...My X has 98k miles on it...
Ok, thanks for the info hopefully I won't have those issues come too soon (my commute is only 4 miles a day).

BTW--I went to KU as well--Rock Chalk Jayhawk !!

You may have other issues with the engine and exhaust never getting fully warmed up if your commute is that short. Short trips like that are killer on cars.

Thanks for the great feedback thus far. I too love my X5 and now that it is paid for don't mind doing some of the more costly repairs, it's still cheaper than a new car or having a car payment

As with any car you never know when things or what things will go wrong. I have an '05 with 33K and just had my transmission replaced under warranty. I was one of the lucky ones that had the slamming on the 2-1 downshift. The flash didn't fix it so they replaced it. Mine is also a CPO so I have a while before I have to really start worrying. At that point I don't think it will matter because I LOVE my X5 and can't imagine driving anything else.

Well I've had that short of a commute for 3.5 years now and I've had mine since day 1 (Feb '01) with little or no problems. I'm in Dallas so it doesn't take much for the car to warm up so hopefully those short commute issues you mentioned don't occur (knock on wood).

The X5's have not been around long enough to know the average life expectancy. If you maintain the vehicle well, the engine should go to at least 300K before you rebulid it. Every thing else can be rebuilt or replaced, so if you live in an area where rust is not an issue, there is no limit to how long your X5 will last. By the way, I've got 104K on my 01' and it's been reliable.
