Ha-Ha My 2005 NEVER stopped rattling. I would have it fixed every few months but it would come right back. I think numerous things cause it (Power Seat Backs, Spare Tire Parts, Cargo Shade)

Hey guys if this helps , I just bought a 2002 x5 4.4 and the rattle in the cargo area drove me crazy, so I had my brother drive with me lying down in the back . I pressed all the plastic panels in the cargo area that were around the window and the noise didnt stop, but when I pressed outward on the window the rattle stopped. So its the rear window hitting all the panels that surround the the window. I fixed the noise once and for all by putting 1/4 inch window seal the foam stuff that sticks on one side on all all the edging of the plastic panels that would hit against the window. Do this by removing the panels its easier. Also I used rubber cement on all the clips that hold the plastic panels in place just to be sure . There ya go the infamous rattle was gone. I also adjusted the hatch knobs to make sure I got a tight fit when the hatch is shut. Any questions please ask......Good Luck

If all else fails.... turn up the stereo. Sucks, but it works.

Wow this post is a blast from the past...I tried everything under the sun, I installed new rubber hatch bumper stops, felt furniture guards on top of the rubber stops, etc....NOTHING worked, until I decided to get my rear bumper painted and when they reinstalled the bumper vuolla...no more trunk rattle, knock on wood it is perfectly silent! Magic...you may want to have you bumper removed and reattached

I don't know if this will interest anyone but I think I know where the rear rattle is coming from. It's actually the centre seat belt which when loose seems to rattle inside.

I plugged this in so it was tight and since then the rattle has gone. 3 days of country driving, lots of pot holes and rough roads and no more sound. Not an ideal solution but I'm happy I know what's causing it.

You could take out your rear cargo cover as well and see if it helps

unfortunetly the rattlees will never cease...i have a 2005 with 17k miles and everyday one rattle goes away and another starts..sometimes it sounds like it is coming from the reart hatch other times from under the rear load floor but oddly when it is cold rattles cease and when weather warms up they come back very weird..i also have a buzzing noise from under the rear left seat still cant figure that one out had fuel pump changed but noise is still there..i am very disappointed with bmw as a whole...the only thing that it has going for it is the handling..

I have also had the rattle issue in the back, thought it was the rear window so I also adjusted the bump stops. What I found is it may be the rear window supports, if you hold onto one and wiggle it, it creaks and rattles, same noise as when the X hits bumps. The bump stop adjustment makes the window sit more snug but maybe replacing the struts may also help? Going to play around with that this week to see if it helps. Other than this creak/rattle, no other noises from the X.
