Exclamation RPMs drop and catch at low speeds HELP!

I need some expert opinions before I take my X to the shop.

I have a 2003 4.4i with 99,200 miles. Recently the RPMs have been dropping and then catching at low speeds when accelerating. It only occurs between 1,000 and 2,000 RPMs but it is noticeable and has me worried. I definitely feel a lag when it happens.

Some additional info. Last time I went to the shop they told me :
Engine valve cover gasket is leaking oil
Small oil leak from rear axle differential
Front transverse drive flex disk has small crack
Small oil leaks from timing cover gaskets

My question is......could one of the above issues be causing this? These issues were diagnosed in late April. Or, could it be the dreaded tranny issues that require a VERY expensive rebuild?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
