Painting 20 Inch Wheels Gun Metal Grey

I'm considering painting my 20 inch wheels Gun Metal Grey or possibly black, Does anyone have any pics of a carbon black X with painted wheels so I can see before I commit

imho the gunmetal look is nice but it gives off a dirty look !! i'd just go blk like a semi gloss !!

i agree..it makes it look dirty...go with black with a gloss..

Gloss black. You may want to powder coat them. I dont think black is to expensive. When I checked into it a couple of years ago gun metal was way more expense in the powder coat. The shinner they are on a dark wheel the cleaner it looks and the less it looks like you spay painted them. I think it would be sick to see a black x5 with black factory 20s

It doesnt look like I spray painted my wheels. Well atleast to me it doesnt. I sprayed mine and saved myself a couple hundred dollars. It was a fun, easy project.

Clean 'em up with some good wheel cleaner and tape off the wheel from the tire

3 coats of primer on entire wheel 10 min between each coat.

Then just spray them with 5 coats of high temp (I used Duplicolor) spray paint



Cost $15
Time 2 hours

Your rims look great. The only thing that would scare me on wheels would be changing tires and chippin. Rims take a little more abuse than the rest of your car. One thing I have found was using clear laquer from auto parts store instead of clear coat in a can works much better to get a shine more like real paint. The laquer seems to keep its shine for much longer than the can clear coat. I usually put down a light coat, wait 10 mins, then 2 wet coats.

i didnt actually put down any clear on top. I actually did this 2 days before putting on new Toyos and the slightly chipped 1 wheels rim. I cant even notice it but if i could i would just hit it with a little black paint and it'd be good to go

you might consider a hyper black look which may be a gun metal look with gloss to it. here's a sample pic

Or Hypersilver paint. BMW used it on a few wheels...it's a little bit darker than the regular silver painted rims. I have it on my Z3's 17" Radial Spoke #32s and it's definitely deeper in color.
