02 X5 Issue with Stereo and CD Changer

Hey,
I am new here, just picked up my first BMW. A 2002 X5. I have a couple of issues. By the way this site is great and has tone of great information.
The issues I have, I have a factory stereo (no nav) the stereo signal seems very weak and in some places I loose it all together? Any quick fixes for this?
Secondly, my CD player is not taking in cds, and they I placed cds in the cd changer in the center console but I don't know how to get it to work. I appologize in adavance for my ignorance. Any halp would be greatly appreciated

you do not haave a CD changer in the center console. the 6 disc in the center console is just the CD holder.[

Damn I feel pretty stupid. Any thoughts on the issue with the stereo?
