Thumbs up Value of Extended Maintenance

I purchased the Extended Warranty and Maintenance package when I got my X5. I am now into that realm. I had Inspection II and rear brake job done today, along with a few little things like new windshield wipers. I was told the bill would have been over $1200, if I hadn't bought the extension! Glad I did it!!!

Yup. If you buy a BMW and turn down the extended maintenance warranty...you need help haha. My E53 is out of maintenance warranty and it definately costs..brakes alone are over 1200! Just did Service Inspecition I the other day for over $500. Still love it though. The E70 is warrantied..don't have to pay a penny for 6 years!

I am glad it worked out for you in your particular situation, but if you can do some simple maintenance yourself, it is not even close to being worth it.

Example; I changed rotors and pads on all four wheels on my 4.4 as well as the two sensors for $420, with equal or better than OEM parts and DIY oil changes can be done for about $60+/-.

A typical Inspection II consists of an oil and filter change, air filter change, micro (cabin) filter change, and some other random things like a windshiled washer adjustment (laughable) and adding in a can of fuel system cleaner (which is the same exact thing as Chevron's Techron fuel system cleaner).

Those items can be bought as follows (approximate);

oil filter - $10
oil - $50
air filter - $17
micro filter - $38
Techron - $8
New wiper blades $60

for a total of about $185

So, one full brake job at about $420, plus Inspection II for about $185 and one random oil change for $60 would be about $665. That is much cheaper than extending the maintenance warranty for $1,200.

Although, if you can't do these things yourself or are the type who doesn't like picking up a wrench, then you are right and extending the plan can save you some money. Otherwise, if you are the type of person who enjoys getting your hands dirty evey once in a while, one afternoon of work can save you nearly 50%.
