X5 Starting Problems

So when I go to start my X I put key in ignition and turn key and nothing happens no crank, nothing. But I noticed that my oil light and engine light are dim. So I take the key out and start the procedure again, and it works great starts no problem. It almost seems like there is a bad graound somewhere? any one have this problem??

x5 (E53) Starting problem…

I have a 2005 X5 4.4 that experiences somewhat similar problems. One day it simply decided not to start. It turned over, but the fire just wouldn't catch.

It was towed to the dealer, who took a week to replace an actuator on the starter. Picked it up and made a couple of stops before finally parking it in the driveway. The next evening — the same problem. Simply wouldn't start. I took out the key and tried again. Moved it to neutral. Tried it different times. Towed to the dealer again — where it started with no problem (multiple times).

It's now getting to the point where I'm going to worry each time I take it out. Will it or won't it start.

I too suspect some sort of electrical problem (grounding or some such thing). Would love to hear from anyone else who had a similar problem and how it was resolved.

Y'all sound like you have 2 different problems... klnteg sounds like an intermittent power supply kinda problem and MajorWebUser has an intermittent crank/no start problem, which woulldn't have been the starter actuator... if it spins over but doesn't catch, the starter is working fine... Sounds to me like perhaps it didn't see the crank sensor or something to that effect.

As for the op's problem, did you check the battery connections? And also check the connection condition at the jump point under the hood, as the cable from there is the one that goes to the starter and altenator. I've seen that one get a bad connection and melt a bit.

Replace the ignition switch in the steering column... less than $100 and will fix the problems. I had engine lights that wouldn't go out after starting and sometimes the car wouldn't start at all... it was intermittent and most to the times if I turned the car off and back on 2-3 times the lights on the dash finally went out. Since replacing the switch, I've not had any
problems.

Its an easy DIY job.
